Lakeland's Youngest Students Plant a Garden with Small Grant
Lakeland Community College granted the Partner in Science Excellence Grant for $500 to Mrs. Jane Booth Coordinator/Lead Teacher of the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) located on the college campus. The grant is being used by children ages 3-5 to grow their own garden at the campus.
Not only do the children learn about planting they also learn math and science as well. The children will be involved in sorting, classifying, identifying, measuring and using their senses to discover their world. The garden is the perfect place to practice these science skills. "One of the main reasons we have the grant was thanks to two parents Sharon Grape of the Holden Arboretum, and Mr. Lingafelter who helped with the gardening, and teaching the children all about gardening. We could not have done it without parents," says Jane Booth.

Lakeland Career Coach Project Wins "Exemplary Practice"
The Lakeland Career Coach project at Lakeland Community College will be recognized with an Exemplary Practice Award by the National Council on Student Development (NCSD) in April 2005. Dr. Doreen Larson, Assistant VP for Student Access and Services, will accept the award at the AACC Convention for the college.
Lakeland Community College developed the on-line career exploration website called "Career Coach" at www.lakelandcc.edu/careercoach. The website is free and available to any person who wants to be more valuable in their current job, thinks their job will not grow in the future, wants to change jobs, is unemployed and needs a job right away, is out of work and looking for a better job, or is out of work and looking for a new career path.
The Career Coach engages unemployed and stagnant workers who seek to advance into higher paying, more satisfying jobs. The website educates visitors about assessing their employment goals, their work preferences and skills to meet their continuing career-long needs. It provides a friendly gateway to counseling, education, training and employment information and resources at Lakeland Community College, and also refers to resources outside of Lakeland.
Each year NCSD recognizes 12 exemplary community college student development programs through a nomination and expert review process. This award celebrates programs that promote student development in community colleges.
