2003 Capman Parsons Award
The Ohio Library Council is pleased to announce that Holly Carroll, Director of the Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library, will receive the 2003 Capman Parsons Award. This award is given in recognition of significant activity of accomplishment in the area of government relations.

Lakeland Police Chief and Alum Honored by Emerald Society
The Greater Cleveland Police Emerald Society has named Lakeland Community College Police Chief James T. McBride man of the year. Former Lakeland Police officer and Lakeland graduate Brian Reardon, was also honored with the Emerald Society's Distinguished Service Award.
This Irish-American society recently reelected McBride to another two-year term as the local Emerald Society president. He is known locally for his contributions to police memorial services and police training efforts. He is co-founder of the Cleveland Emerald Society, and a co-founder of the annual National Emerald Society pipe band memorial march and service in Washington D.C.
The Emerald Society's Brehon Council recognizes members of the Irish-American community who deserves special thanks for their support of the organization and its ideals.

"Earth Day to Earth Day" Poster Contest Winners
9 were chosen from 227 entries in a local contest sponsored by the Lake County Solid Waste District.
These 9 students will have their posters entered in the statewide contest and will receive an Art Kit. Their teachers will receive a $15.00 educational certificate.

Samantha Catella to Participate in Scientific Journey
Samantha Catella has been chosen to participate in a scientific journey to Californias Channel Islands. Catella, a 9th grader at Andrews School in Willoughby, will accompany a team of leading scientists and elite teachers. Catella was nominated by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and selected out of thousands of students worldwide to travel with the JASON Project from January 27th through February 2003.

Willowick Passes Resolution on 9/11 Memorial
Willowick City Council passed a resolution thanking owners and staff of The Cabin Restaurant in Willowick for its 911 memorial service. Owners Barbara/Martin Belich and Susan/Joseph Durkoske were recognized as providing an exceptional memorial service in commemoration of the tragic events of 9/11/01.

Grant Awards Assist Local Law Enforcement
U.S. Senator Mike DeWine announced that the City of Cleveland will receive $111,490, and the Seven Hills Police Dept. will receive $150,000 from the U.S. Department of Justices Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), which provides competitive grants to assist local law enforcement agencies.

Saint John Vianney Dedicates New Church
The Catholic Community of Saint John Vianney dedicated its new church on September 29th. This event marks the culmination of three years of work and study overseen by Pastor Father Tomas Johns. Distinguished Service Award to Mentor Firefighter
Ohio Firefighter, John D. Preuer in Mentor, was honored on September 11th with a Distinguished Service Award and inducted in the Ohio Fire Service Hall of Fame. A former fire chief, John has more than 30 years experience in and contributions to Ohios Fire Service. Ceremonies took place in Reynoldsburg with Gary Suhadolnik, Director of the Ohio Dept. of Commerce presiding.

Grant Awarded to Wooster Professors
Wooster Professors, Misters David McConnell and Charles Hurst, have received a $35,000 grant from the Spencer Foundation to study "The Changing Landscape of Learning in Amish Schools and Communities"

Grant Awarded for Improvements to Quality of Life
Geauga County Mental Health Association received grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities. The RMHC-NEO awards grants to qualified not-for-profit organizations whose programs improve the quality of life for children and their families in Northeastern Ohio.

Tri- C Department of Nursing Awarded
Cuyahoga Community College Department of Nursing awarded full 8-year accreditation commencing 2002 and ending 2010. Tri-Cs nursing program demonstrates a strong curriculum, a systematic plan of program evaluation and efforts toward program improvement through achievement of outcomes.

A.S.I.D. Honors Sri-C Students
American Society of Interior Designers honors Tri-C eastern Campus Student Chapter with honorable mention award in Student Chapter of the year competition. Directed by Chapter president, Kara Jerdon, the college met major goals such as; fundraising for the New York Relief Fund; completing a space in the American Cancer Society Show House; assisting in the planning of a student career day - among other activities.

Homeland Security Grant to Cleveland Police
Governor Bob Taft awards Homeland Security Grant to Cleveland Police: Ohio will receive more than $1.5 million for local law enforcement preparedness. Clevelands Byrne Homeland Security grant funding will allow the city to procure personal protective equipment for law enforcement personnel, and train them on equipment usage.

Distinguished Citizens - Rich & Pat Hunter
For the last 28 years, this Willowick couple volunteered with the Youth Wrestling Program at the West End Branch of the Lake County YMCA in Willoughby. Over these years, they coached over 1800 wrestlers aged 4 through 14.

For nearly 100 years, the family-operated Davis Funeral Home of Willoughby has served the community with compassionate, personal care as people have coped with some of lifes most difficult situations. Chuck Davis, grandson of the founder, leads his experienced staff of five.
