Christmas Fruit Bars | Slovenian Christmas Cookies

2 eggs
3/4 cup mixed candied fruit
1 cup sifted powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter, melted
1 cup chopped walnuts
3/4 cup sifted flour
1 cup chopped dates
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
Beat eggs until light and fluffy; gradually beat in sugar. Stir in melted butter. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt and fold into egg mixture with nuts, dates and candied fruit. Spread in a greased 9x9x2-inch baking pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Cut into bars when cool. If desired, frost with buttercream frosting and top each piece with a candied cherry.

1 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup currant jelly
1-1/2 cups sugar
4 egg whites
1 egg yolk
3/4 cup finely ground nuts
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon lemon flavoring
2-1/2 cups sifted flour
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
Beat butter until creamy, adding 1/2 cup sugar gradually, then beat until fluffy. Beat in egg yolk and salt. Stir in flour; mix well. Pat mixture into a thin layer in bottom of a 9x13-inch pan. Beat jelly slightly with a fork and spread on dough. Whip egg whites until stiff. Gradually add remaining sugar, continuing to whip until stiff peaks form. Fold in ground nuts and flavoring. Swirl over jelly. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes until brown. Cool in pan. Cut into 1-1/2 inch squares. Makes 4 dozen. Can be frozen.
