Sour Turnips - Alice Kuhar's Recipes

(Kisla Repa)
1 lb sour turnips
1 medium chopped onion
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons shortening or lard
Rinse turnips in cold water; drain. In saucepan saute onion in shortening or lard until golden; add flour stirring until flour slightly brown. Stir in sour turnips and water and simmer about 35 to 40 minutes.

(Sour Turnips)
1 lb. repa (sour turnips)
1/2 cup cold water
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup water
Hot cracklings or Cooked crumbled bacon
If turnips are too sour, rinse in lukewarm water. Drain. Cook in 1 cup boiling water until, tender, about 20 minutes. Mix the flour into cold water; stir into turnips (do not drain). Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Before serving, stir in hot pork cracklings or crumbled bacon OR drippings from pork roast (about 3 tablespoons). Serve with boiled or mashed potatoes and pork roast or any variety of sausage; smoked, blood, rice, etc.

1 - cup boiling water
1 tablespoon flour
2 strips bacon, diced and fried crisp
2 cups (1 lb.) homemade sour turnips
Rinse turnips in cold water; drain. In a saucepan add turnips and water and simmer for 30 minutes. Do not drain. Add fried bacon. Stir in flour and simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
